Kano re-run election: INEC recruits 657 ad hoc staff
No fewer than 657 ad hoc staff have been recruited by the Independent
National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the re-run election in
Minjibir Constituency of Kano State billed for next Saturday.
The ad hoc staff included a returning officer, collation officers, supervisors and presiding officers, who were all sourced from tertiary institutions and the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).
Resident Electoral Commissioner, Kaduna State, Alhaji Abdullahi Kaugama, disclosed this yesterday at a stakeholders meeting held at the Kano State headquarters of the commission.
He explained that the re-run election was as a result of the suspension of the by-election conducted last June.
Ahead of the election, he explained that the commission had concluded the charging of 170 card readers even as he added that the electronic devices have been reconfigured and arranged specifically for the purpose of the election.
He added that the state INEC had received all the non-sensitive materials while the sensitive materials will soon be delivered to the Central Bank of Nigeria, Kano in due course, from where it will be retrieved by the commission a day before the elections.
He said that the security agencies, INEC and the political parties have learnt a lot of lessons from the experiences of the suspended elections and were subsequently resolved to ensure the successful conduct of the re- run polls come July 30, 2016.
He disclosed that various conflict resolution groups, among them Justice Development Peace Commission, Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution and Savanah Center for Diplomacy Democracy and Development have all intervened and mobilized the required consensus for a violence free election in the constituency.
He added also that a pace accord was signed by the various political parties involved in the re- run election with a view to ensure a violence free exercise. - THE SUN
